FISCHER RISK MANAGEMENT / COVERAGE

General liability insurance. Start with the operation, not just the required limit.

A customer contract may name a limit. Your insurance review also needs the work you perform, the people who visit, and the activities the policy describes.

What is commercial general liability insurance?

Commercial general liability insurance addresses specified premises and operations liability exposures. Review customer contracts, insured activities, exclusions, and limits alongside separate professional, product, employee, and cyber exposures.

What happens at your premises and on the job?

A lease, retailer agreement, or customer contract may specify a liability limit. Bring the complete requirement rather than only the certificate request. Discuss your locations, events, installation work, overseas activities, and any new products or services. A certificate summarizes insurance; it does not by itself add coverage or change the policy.

Is general liability the same as product liability?

They overlap in some insurance programs but should not be treated as interchangeable labels. Products-completed operations may be included within a general liability policy or arranged separately. A product business should review the products insured, territories, manufacturing and distribution roles, and any product exclusions. Also consider recall expenses separately.

What should we discuss about additional insureds?

Share agreements asking your business to add a landlord, retailer, or other party as an additional insured. Ask which endorsement is proposed, what operations it applies to, and whether the wording matches the request. Contractual obligations and an insurance endorsement are different documents; review them together.

What does general liability leave for other policies?

Do not assume this policy handles professional errors, employee injuries, cyber events, or every intellectual property allegation. Discuss those exposures within the complete program. Insurance for liability to others also does not replace insurance for your own buildings, equipment, or inventory.

How should we compare proposals?

Ask about occurrence and aggregate limits, defense arrangements, deductibles or retained amounts, classifications, exclusions, and endorsement wording. Share loss history and explain changes in operations. A higher limit alone does not correct an excluded activity. Compare terms alongside the contracts and exposures that prompted the review.

What helps an initial inquiry?

Start with your company website, business activities, locations, revenue range, current policy information, and renewal or contract deadline. Cory can discuss what additional underwriting information is needed and how to provide detailed documents appropriately. Availability and terms depend on the business and markets available.
