What to gather before asking a broker to review your insurance.

For the first conversation, start with your website, what your business does, why you want a review, and your timing. Detailed policies and applications can follow through an agreed document-sharing process.

You do not need to guess every underwriting question before contacting a broker. You do need a clear explanation of the business and the decision in front of you.

Start with four useful pieces of context.

  • Your company website and a short description of its products or services.
  • The reason for the review: renewal, a customer requirement, growth, or a question about the current program.
  • The deadline and any planned start date.
  • The people who can confirm operations and insurance decisions.

Those details help establish the scope of the discussion. If there is an existing policy concern, describe the question without uploading private documents into the initial website inquiry.

Then build the document list around the business.

After the first conversation, your broker can identify the relevant information and sharing method. Possible working documents include current policies and endorsements, a policy schedule, applications, requested loss information, customer insurance requirements, and business-change details.

For a product business, prepare to explain sourcing, manufacturing, inventory, and distribution. For a technology company, prepare to describe services, customer dependencies, and data responsibilities. Supply the information that applies to your operation rather than copying another company’s application.

Write down the questions you want answered.

  • Does the current description still reflect the business?
  • What changed since the last review?
  • Which contract requirements need comparison with the policies?
  • What terms do you want explained before making a decision?
  • What would make this review useful to you?

A review can become unfocused if it begins and ends with premium. Give your broker the operational or contractual concern behind the price question.

Use a checklist as a starting point.

Our business insurance review checklist helps organize changes, products, inventory, contracts, current policies, and questions. It is available without signup. It is not an application or a complete list of everything an underwriter may request.

For another example of review topics, The Hartford’s coverage checkup raises questions about property values, locations, and other business changes. The relevant questions depend on your own operation.

What happens after you contact Cory?

Cory will follow up to discuss what your business does, the reason for the review, and the information needed for the next step. The initial inquiry starts that conversation. Coverage availability and any proposed terms remain subject to underwriting and the policy issued.
